Islet cell transplant for brittle type 1 diabetes

Who can take part

  • Aged 18 to 70, and able to give written consent
  • Type 1 diabetes started before age 40, and you’ve needed insulin for at least 5 years
  • Tests show low or absent insulin production (low C-peptide on a meal test) and you’ve had severe low blood sugar in the last year
  • You must be doing intensive diabetes care (often checking sugars and using multiple daily insulin shots or a pump)
  • You have documented low-blood-sugar unawareness or big blood sugar swings, based on screening questionnaires/tests
  • You may not qualify if you have certain health issues (for example, BMI over 30, serious eye disease, kidney problems, active infections, or certain pregnancy plans)
