Who can take part

  • Baby was born at 35 weeks or later
  • Baby’s birth weight was at least 1.8 kg (about 4 lb 6 oz)
  • Doctors believe the oxygen/brain injury happened within the last 6 hours
  • Baby has severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (severe brain injury from lack of oxygen around birth)
  • The baby does not have a lethal chromosomal condition or severe growth restriction (severe IUGR)
  • There is not a large brain bleed on ultrasound (no Grade III or Grade IV bleeding)
