Hydrogen therapy for newborns with brain injury from oxygen loss

This study tests whether breathing a mix of hydrogen and oxygen gas can help protect the brain in babies who had a lack of oxygen around the time of birth (called HIE). It is looking for babies born full-term who need a breathing tube and are at high risk of brain damage.

Who can take part

  • Your baby was born at 36 weeks or later (full-term).
  • There was a major event around birth like a sudden drop in heart rate or the umbilical cord came out first, OR your baby had a very low Apgar score at 10 minutes, OR needed chest compressions or a breathing tube for a long time right after birth, OR the first blood test showed very high acid levels or a very low base number.
  • Your baby shows signs of moderate or severe brain injury (encephalopathy) within the first 2 hours of life.
  • Your baby has a breathing tube (is intubated and on a ventilator) when joining the study.
  • Your baby does not have a known serious heart defect, genetic syndrome, major birth defects, or brain malformation, and is not on a special high-frequency ventilator.
