Deep brain stimulation for severe, treatment-resistant depression

You may be more likely to qualify if your depression has been present for years, has been resistant to multiple medications and therapies, and if you meet specific safety and testing requirements.

Who can take part

  • You’re 22–70 years old, and you are not pregnant
  • You have a confirmed diagnosis of major depression as your main problem
  • Your depression has been going on a long time (at least 24 months) or has repeatedly come back
  • You’ve tried at least 4 adequate depression treatments (from 2 different types) and they didn’t work
  • Your depression is still severe on depression rating scales (checked at screening and again before surgery)
  • You’ve had a brain MRI within 3 months that the study team considers safe for surgery
