Who can take part
- You’re 22–70 years old, and you are not pregnant
- You have a confirmed diagnosis of major depression as your main problem
- Your depression has been going on a long time (at least 24 months) or has repeatedly come back
- You’ve tried at least 4 adequate depression treatments (from 2 different types) and they didn’t work
- Your depression is still severe on depression rating scales (checked at screening and again before surgery)
- You’ve had a brain MRI within 3 months that the study team considers safe for surgery
