This trial studies whether taking rifaximin plus lactulose can prevent a brain problem called hepatic encephalopathy (confusion) after TIPS, a procedure to reduce pressure in the liver. It may help people who are having TIPS planned and are at risk of this complication.

Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old
  • You have confirmed liver scarring (cirrhosis) from biopsy, scan (like Fibroscan), or standard test results
  • You are scheduled for an elective TIPS procedure for hard-to-control fluid buildup or repeat bleeding from enlarged veins (varices)
  • You have risk factors such as not improving with water pills, kidney/electrolyte problems from water pills, or bleeding that endoscopic treatment and beta-blockers couldn’t control
  • You have not taken rifaximin within the last 3 months and you are not using ciclosporin
  • You should not have certain exclusions like planned emergency TIPS within 72 hours, non-cirrhotic portal pressure, portal vein blockage, HIV, major neurologic conditions, or be pregnant/breastfeeding

BCAA vs. Rifaximin to Prevent Recurrent Hepatic Encephalopathy
