PEMF therapy to reduce pain after shoulder or knee surgery

This trial studies whether PEMF, a type of non-surgical device that uses pulsed electromagnetic fields, can reduce pain after shoulder or knee surgery. If you join, you’ll also be expected to do post-surgery physical therapy exercises and report your pain and function.

Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old and can consent to the study
  • You are scheduled for shoulder or knee surgery
  • You have not used NSAIDs for 1 week before surgery (low-dose 81 mg aspirin is allowed)
  • You can take part in post-operative physical therapy exercises
  • You do not have certain connective tissue, inflammatory, or metabolic bone diseases
  • You do not have diabetes, HIV/hepatitis, fibromyalgia or chronic pain syndrome, or active infection or cancer
