Metformin trial for vision nerve recovery in young people with MS

This study tests whether metformin can help “reset” damaged nerve cells in the brain and improve vision-related nerve problems in children and young adults with multiple sclerosis. Participants are assigned to metformin or a comparison treatment in a blinded (not everyone knows which) study.

Who can take part

  • Ages 10 to 25 years (and 11 months)
  • MS history with vision-nerve involvement that has lasted more than 6 months since the last attack or event
  • Eye testing must show signs of nerve damage: one or more abnormal eye measurements (VEP, OCT nerve layer thickness, or a big difference between eyes)
  • If you take MS medicines, the dose and medicine must have stayed the same for the last 6 months
  • Blood tests must show kidneys and liver are working well enough, with no major ongoing kidney/liver problems
  • Not already taking metformin, and not recently treated with steroid doses for a relapse (within 30 days)
