This trial tests whether the drug metformin can reduce scarring (gliosis) in the spinal cord after a recent thoraco-lumbar injury. If you've had a spinal cord injury in the past 24 hours and meet the criteria, you may be able to join.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 65 years old.
  • You had a spinal cord injury between the T1 vertebra and the conus medullaris (the lower end of the spinal cord) in the last 24 hours.
  • You have new weakness or numbness from the injury (ASIA grade B, C, or D).
  • You can have an MRI of your spine.
  • You do not have diabetes, and you are not already taking metformin.
  • You do not have other serious conditions like severe brain injury, kidney failure, or metal implants.
