Testing how your brain responds to carbon dioxide in epilepsy

This study measures how sensitive your brain is to higher carbon dioxide levels to learn more about sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). You may be invited because you have epilepsy and are having evaluation at a specialized epilepsy unit or clinic.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 99 years old
  • You have confirmed or suspected epilepsy
  • You will either be admitted to the epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) or seen at the University of Iowa epilepsy clinic
  • You do not have serious, uncontrolled heart, lung, or liver problems
  • You are not using opioid medicines
  • If you can become pregnant, you are not pregnant and use highly effective birth control
