Who can take part

  • Your baby must have a confirmed diagnosis of critical congenital heart disease (CCHD).
  • Your baby is expected to need heart surgery using a heart-lung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass) within the first 4 weeks of life.
  • Both parents must be able to provide consent for the study.
  • Your baby must be at least 36 weeks gestational age and weigh at least 2000 grams at birth.
  • The study team must be able to enroll your baby before delivery (if diagnosed before birth) or within 24 hours before surgery (if diagnosed after birth).
  • The surgery must specifically require the heart-lung machine, and care must not be comfort-care-only.
