Who can take part

  • You came to the ER within 48 hours of starting atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter
  • Your ER doctor plans to treat the rhythm of the irregular heartbeat right away
  • Your resting heart rate is 110 beats per minute or less before or after rate-control treatment
  • Your general health looks okay to the ER doctor (no major complicated acute illness)
  • You can receive standard clot-prevention medicines (anticoagulation) safely
  • A heart ultrasound through the esophagus (transesophageal echocardiogram) is safe for you
