PFO closure comparison trial for cryptogenic stroke

This trial studies ways to close a patent foramen ovale (PFO) to help prevent another stroke in people whose prior stroke had an unknown cause. If you qualify, you may receive one of the PFO closure approaches the study is comparing.

Who can take part

  • You can sign an informed consent form and agree to follow all study visits and procedures
  • You are 18 to 60 years old (at time of screening)
  • A neurologist confirmed you have a PFO and a “cryptogenic” (unknown-cause) stroke
  • Your stroke symptoms lasted at least 24 hours, or imaging showed a new stroke area even if symptoms were shorter
  • You completed heart rhythm monitoring for long enough to look for an irregular rhythm (at least 24 hours, with 30 days recommended)
  • You can safely do required imaging and blood tests, including scans with contrast (or other heart/neck imaging) and blood tests to rule out clotting disorders
