Who can take part
- You had major heart surgery with a heart-lung machine, and it has been more than 24 hours
- You were taken off the breathing tube (extubated) at least 6 hours ago
- Before surgery, your heart pumping was low (left ventricular ejection fraction under 40%)
- You are already set up with special heart monitoring lines (pulmonary artery catheter and an arterial line for monitoring during and after surgery)
- Your oxygen level is stable on regular oxygen (oxygen flow not above 6 liters per minute and oxygen saturation stays high, about 92% or more)
- You have no major breathing emergency, and you must be safe for noninvasive breathing support (no contraindications)
