Phenylephrine test to better grade mitral valve leak severity

This trial tests whether a medication called phenylephrine helps doctors measure how severe mitral regurgitation (mitral valve leak) is. If you’re already scheduled for a special ultrasound from the esophagus, this study may help improve how your valve leak is assessed.

Who can take part

  • You are age 18 or older.
  • You have mitral regurgitation (mitral valve leak) seen on your first ultrasound test.
  • You are scheduled to get a TEE (an ultrasound probe placed in the esophagus) to further evaluate the leak.
  • You must be considered safe enough to have a TEE by your care team.
  • You should not have major breathing or circulation instability around the test (your team should judge this).
  • Your blood pressure and heart rhythm should be stable enough for the medication test, and you should not have certain serious heart and brain risks.
