Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are an inpatient on a participating palliative care unit
  • You currently have agitated delirium, or you had delirium in the last 6 months, or you are in the last two weeks of life and expected to die during this stay
  • Your blood pressure is stable (systolic blood pressure must be 80 mmHg or higher)
  • Your heart rate is not too slow at the start (baseline heart rate must be 60 beats per minute or higher)
  • You are not taking verapamil, diltiazem, or beta-blockers—unless they can be stopped before dexmedetomidine is given
