Testing brain blood-flow control in recent carotid or MCA narrowing

This study tests how well your brain controls its own blood flow (“cerebral autoregulation”) after a recent TIA or ischemic stroke caused by a narrowed carotid or MCA artery. It may help researchers understand why symptoms happen and how to better assess brain circulation after stroke.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 80 years old and can speak/participate in testing
  • You recently had a TIA or ischemic stroke in the area supplied by a narrowed artery, started within the last 30 days
  • You have narrowing on only one side (unilateral): either the carotid artery (ICA) or the middle brain artery (M1 segment of the MCA)
  • Your function before the stroke was high (mRS 0–1), and your stroke severity score is not too high (NIHSS 20 or less)
  • You can do ultrasound-type testing (you have adequate bone “windows” on both sides) and you can cooperate while awake
  • You have not had (and do not plan) a procedure like stenting/endarterectomy for the blocked artery, and you’re not in another trial within 6 months
