Protein plus movement therapy and muscle stimulation after ICU

This study looks at whether adding protein, physical movement therapy, and electrical muscle stimulation can improve recovery in older people after a long ICU stay. If you qualify, you would be asked to participate in rehab activities soon after a move to a long-term care hospital.

Who can take part

  • Be 60 years or older
  • Have been admitted to an LTACH (long-term acute care hospital) within the last 72 hours
  • Have had an ICU stay lasting at least 2 weeks
  • Be able to follow instructions in English and take part in physical therapy
  • Have been fairly independent before ICU (Barthel score 70 or higher)
  • Have all four arms and legs intact and able to move before LTACH admission
