Acetazolamide for sleep apnea: sleep and brain outcomes

This study tests acetazolamide (a medicine that changes breathing chemistry) to see how it affects sleep quality and neurocognitive (brain/memory/attention) outcomes in adults with untreated moderate to severe sleep apnea. You may be eligible if you have significant sleep apnea but do not have certain safety risks or need to start standard sleep apnea treatment right away.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 35 or less
  • Your sleep apnea is untreated and moderate to severe (AHI 15 or higher)
  • Your sleep test does not show very low oxygen levels during most of the night
  • You are not planning to start or restart standard sleep apnea treatment within the next 3 months
  • You can give consent and follow the study steps
