PET-Scan Tailored De-escalation for p16+ throat cancer

This trial tests a treatment plan that may lower (de-escalate) therapy intensity for certain p16+ or HPV-positive throat cancers. It uses PET scan results and tumor features to try to keep cancer control while reducing side effects.

Who can take part

  • You have confirmed squamous cell throat cancer in the tonsil/base of tongue/throat area (or an unknown primary) that is p16-positive or HPV-positive
  • Your PET scan shows high activity (FDG-avid) with SUV max 4.0 or higher
  • Your cancer is stage I–II and there are no distant metastases
  • You are at least 18 and can safely get the imaging used in the study
  • You cannot have certain advanced disease features (cT4, cN3, or cM1), or “matted” lymph nodes/extra spread outside the node
  • You must not have had prior treatment for this throat cancer and must be well enough for chemotherapy-type medicines
