Hypertonic saline to protect kidneys after a heart transplant

This trial tests whether a hypertonic salt fluid (a higher-salt saline solution) can help prevent sudden kidney injury after heart transplant surgery. If you’re recently hospitalized for a heart transplant, you may be eligible if specific kidney support needs and critical breathing/circulation devices aren’t already required.

Who can take part

  • You are currently hospitalized for a heart transplant surgery (not a planned earlier procedure)
  • Your kidneys do not require a machine to do kidney-filtering (renal replacement therapy) right at the time of transplant
  • You do not need a heart-lung machine called ECMO before or immediately after the transplant
  • There are not severe major complications right around the surgery
  • This is not a combined transplant (for example, heart plus kidney or heart plus lungs)
  • Your blood sodium level is not high (Na is below 145)
  • Your blood sodium level is not severely low (Na is above 120)
