Who can take part

  • You have high blood pressure that is not controlled well with at least two medications.
  • Your systolic blood pressure (the top number) is between 150 and 179 mmHg in the doctor's office and between 135 and 169 mmHg over 24 hours.
  • You are taking an ACE inhibitor or ARB (like lisinopril or losartan) plus a calcium channel blocker (like amlodipine) or a thiazide diuretic.
  • Your kidney function is good (eGFR at least 45).
  • You do not have diabetes that is poorly controlled, severe lung disease, or a history of stroke or heart attack in the last 3 months.
  • Your carotid body (a small structure in your neck) can be seen on an ultrasound.
