Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older
  • You have sickle cell disease (like SS, SC, Sbeta0, or Sbeta+)
  • You have acute chest syndrome (fever, breathing trouble, and a new spot on your chest X-ray)
  • You need at least 2 liters of oxygen per minute to keep your oxygen level normal
  • Your doctor has recommended red blood cell exchange (a special blood filter treatment) for your low oxygen
  • You have not already had a blood transfusion or this exchange for this same chest syndrome episode
