Comparing Armour Thyroid to synthetic T4 for hypothyroidism

This study is testing whether Armour Thyroid (a natural pig-derived thyroid hormone) works as well as synthetic T4 (levothyroxine) for people with hypothyroidism. If you are already on a stable dose of levothyroxine, you may be able to switch to Armour Thyroid and see how it compares.

Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with primary hypothyroidism for at least 1 year.
  • You have been taking synthetic T4 (levothyroxine) for at least the last 12 months.
  • Your current dose of synthetic T4 is stable and at least 25 mcg per day.
  • Your TSH levels have been in the normal range (0.45–4.12) on at least two recent tests.
  • You do not have a condition or surgery that affects how your body absorbs thyroid medication.
  • You are not allergic to pork products or any ingredients in Armour Thyroid.
