This study tests whether taking daily supplements of lutein, zeaxanthin, and fish oil can improve the protective pigment in your eyes. It may help people with low macular pigment and good vision who are not already taking high doses of these nutrients.

Who can take part

  • Your macular pigment density must be low (below 0.43) as measured by a special eye test.
  • Your vision should be at least 20/40 in each eye (with glasses or contacts if you wear them).
  • Your body mass index (BMI) should be between 18.5 and 30.
  • You cannot be allergic to lutein, zeaxanthin, or fish oil.
  • You must not have taken high-dose lutein or zeaxanthin supplements for more than 2 months before the study starts.
  • You should not have certain eye or health conditions (like diabetic retinopathy, vertigo, or a history of concussion), be pregnant or trying to get pregnant, or be vegan.
