Safety of deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 70 years old and have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
  • You've had Parkinson's for at least 5 years.
  • Your Parkinson's symptoms are not well controlled when you're off medication (Hoehn-Yahr stage 2 or higher).
  • Your movement score (UPDRS part III) is at least 30 when you haven't taken medication.
  • Your symptoms improve by at least 30% after taking a standard dose of levodopa (like Madopar).
  • You have at least 6 hours a day of 'off' time (when medication doesn't work) or have motor fluctuations that medication adjustments can't fix.
