Who can take part

  • You must have a newly diagnosed cancer of the oropharynx (back of the throat, including tonsils or base of tongue) that hasn't been treated yet.
  • You need to be scheduled for radiation therapy (with or without chemotherapy) that includes some healthy lymph nodes in the neck.
  • You must be 18 years or older and able to take care of yourself (ECOG score less than 3).
  • You need to have a recent PET-CT scan (or an MRI if PET isn't possible) to check the extent of the cancer.
  • You cannot have had previous surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy for another head or neck cancer, and the cancer must not have spread to distant parts of the body.
