Who can take part

  • Your child is older than 37 weeks corrected age and up to 21 years old (including adults who cannot consent).
  • Your child has been on a breathing machine for less than 72 hours and has severe lung failure (ARDS) with low oxygen levels.
  • Your child is not currently on a special breathing machine called high-frequency ventilation or a heart-lung machine (ECMO), and is not already receiving nitric oxide.
  • Your child does not have a significant air leak from their breathing tube or chest tube (more than 20%).
  • Your child does not have a blue-type heart defect (cyanotic congenital heart disease) or a do-not-resuscitate order.
  • Your child has had a blood gas test done before starting any special treatments.
