  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are scheduled for a planned (not emergency) heart or aortic surgery that uses a heart-lung machine
  • You have not had open heart surgery before
  • You do not have severe heart failure or need major support like a balloon pump or ventilator before surgery
  • You do not have advanced kidney disease (on dialysis or with very low kidney function)
