Who can take part

  • Newborn must have moderate or severe brain injury due to lack of oxygen at birth
  • Newborn must be receiving cooling therapy (therapeutic hypothermia)
  • Baby must be at least 35 weeks into pregnancy and less than 48 hours old
  • Cooling treatment must last for 72 hours
  • Parent or guardian must give permission
  • Mother must be able and willing to provide fresh breast milk
