Sildenafil for newborn brain injury after birth asphyxia

This trial tests whether a liquid form of the medicine sildenafil can help repair brain damage in newborns who had a difficult birth and were treated with cooling. If your baby meets the cooling criteria and has brain injury on an MRI, this study may offer an additional treatment option.

Who can take part

  • Your baby was born at 36 weeks or later and weighed at least 1800 grams (about 4 pounds).
  • There were signs of distress during birth, like a low cord blood pH or low Apgar score.
  • Your baby had moderate to severe brain injury and received whole-body cooling within 6 hours of birth.
  • A brain MRI on day 2 showed brain injury, but no major bleeding or other brain problems.
  • Your baby does not have a complex heart defect, genetic syndrome, or a brain malformation.
