Who can take part

  • You must be scheduled for elective hip or knee replacement surgery.
  • You must be between 18 and 100 years old.
  • You must not have any memory or thinking problems, like dementia or Alzheimer's.
  • You must not be allergic to the study drugs ketamine or dexmedetomidine.
  • You must not have a serious heart rhythm problem or severe kidney or liver disease.
  • You must be able to take part in simple memory tests and understand the study information.
