Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and had a spontaneous (not from an injury) bleed in the upper part of your brain.
  • The size of the bleed is between a walnut and a small lemon (10–60 ml).
  • You are not at immediate risk of death (able to open eyes or move on command, and pupils react to light).
  • No major surgery is planned right away (though a drain for fluid may be placed).
  • You are not currently getting active cancer treatment, and your heart rate is over 50 beats per minute at rest.
  • You can start the study within 2 days (48 hours) of the bleed.
