Using a new MRI contrast agent to see plaque in carotid arteries

This trial tests a new contrast agent called ABL-101 that lights up on a special MRI scan to show inflammation in fatty deposits (plaque) in the carotid arteries. If you are scheduled for surgery to remove plaque from your carotid artery (carotid endarterectomy), this study may help doctors better understand what the plaque is made of and how inflamed it is.

Who can take part

  • You must be 18 or older.
  • You must have significant narrowing in your carotid artery (at least 50% narrowing if you had symptoms like a stroke or TIA, or at least 60% narrowing even without symptoms).
  • You must be scheduled for carotid endarterectomy (plaque removal surgery) at least 2 days from now.
  • You cannot have a bleeding disorder or low platelet count.
  • You must not be pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You must not have any medical condition that weakens your immune system or take immune-suppressing drugs.
  • You must be able to have an MRI scan (no metal implants, no severe claustrophobia).
