Who can take part

  • You are on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 2 days and not making progress in breathing on your own.
  • You have a sudden breathing problem (from low oxygen, too much carbon dioxide, or muscle weakness).
  • A legal decision-maker (like a family member or power of attorney) can give permission for you to join.
  • You do not have a severe brain or nerve condition that would prevent you from coming off the ventilator.
  • You are between 18 and 85 years old, and your body mass index (BMI) is under 60.
