Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • Your heart surgery is planned (not an emergency) and you are considered at intermediate or high risk (a score of more than 4 on the EuroSCORE II).
  • The surgery is one of these types: coronary artery bypass, aortic valve replacement, mitral valve repair or replacement, surgery on the aortic root, or a combination of these.
  • Your surgery will use a heart-lung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass).
  • You are not currently on long-term steroid medication, and you do not have an autoimmune or chronic inflammatory condition.
  • You are not pregnant, not on dialysis for kidney failure, and have not had heart surgery before.
