This trial tests whether metformin can help prevent or manage blood sugar problems that may arise when people with schizophrenia take statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs). If you have schizophrenia, are on a stable medication routine, and have high cholesterol but not diabetes, this study might be an option.

Who can take part
- You are between 18 and 65 years old and have a diagnosis of schizophrenia.
- Your schizophrenia symptoms and medication have been stable for at least 3 months, and you take no more than two antipsychotics.
- You have high cholesterol (total cholesterol ≥ 5.2 mmol/L, or triglycerides ≥ 1.7 mmol/L, or LDL ≥ 3.4 mmol/L) on a fasting blood test.
- Your two most recent fasting blood sugar tests are below 6.1 mmol/L (tests taken 1 to 4 weeks apart).
- You are not pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant during the study.
- You do not have diabetes, significant liver or kidney problems, or certain heart conditions.
