Comparing breathing support after heart surgery in children

Who can take part

  • You or your child must be under 18 years old.
  • You or your child must have had heart surgery and be recovering in the cardiac intensive care unit.
  • You or your child must be considered at high risk for needing a breathing tube again after it is removed (for example, because of young age, open chest surgery, or being on a breathing machine for more than 48 hours).
  • You or your child must have passed the test that shows they are ready to breathe on their own without the breathing tube.
  • You or your child must not have certain conditions like a paralyzed diaphragm, low consciousness, muscle disease, a collapsed lung without a chest tube, blocked airway, a hole in the windpipe, or unplanned removal of the breathing tube.
  • You or your child must not have been on a special breathing machine setting (PEEP over 7) just before the breathing tube was removed.
