Heart and stroke outcomes in people with silent carotid plaques

StrokeAtheroscleroses

Part of Brain & nervous system, Heart & circulation clinical trials.

This study follows people who have carotid plaques (fatty deposits in neck arteries) that haven't caused symptoms yet. It aims to learn how these plaques affect future heart and brain health, like heart attacks or strokes.

Who can take part

  • You have fatty deposits in your neck arteries found on an imaging test (like an ultrasound), but you haven't had a stroke or mini-stroke from them.
  • You have good quality images from your last neck artery exam.
  • You have not had a recent bleeding stroke or brain tumor.
  • You have not had radiation therapy to your neck or surgery/stent on the same side carotid artery.

Ultrasound to study neck artery plaques and predict risk

This study uses different ultrasound techniques to look at plaques in the neck artery and predict future heart or stroke events. It may help doctors understand which plaques are more dangerous.

NCT05764772Recruiting
Testing features of plaque in symptomatic carotid narrowing

This study looks at the makeup of plaque in the carotid artery (the neck blood vessel to the brain) in people who recently had a stroke caused by that narrowing. Researchers will use MRI and planned surgery to see which plaque components may matter for stroke risk and outcomes.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
NCT01732523Recruiting
Check if extra blood-vessel growth predicts stroke risk in carotid narrowing

This study looks at an imaging test to see whether signs of new blood-vessel growth in an artery predict future stroke risk in people who have carotid artery narrowing but no symptoms. If it works, it could help doctors identify who may need closer monitoring or preventive treatment.

NCT06887894Recruiting
Studying unstable plaque in the carotid artery

This trial looks at specific markers in the blood to better understand unstable plaque in the carotid artery. It may help doctors identify which patients are at higher risk for stroke.

NCT05821894Recruiting
Imaging study of plaque in neck arteries before surgery

This study uses pictures (imaging) to learn more about plaque in the neck arteries in people who are being considered for carotid endarterectomy. The results may help doctors better understand artery plaque and improve care.

NCT02748941Recruiting
Imaging study of narrowed neck arteries after stroke

This study looks at new imaging markers in people with significant narrowing of the carotid artery (the main artery in the neck). It compares people who recently had a stroke from that artery with people who have no recent stroke, to better understand stroke risk and artery disease.
