This trial tests whether a protein called GDNF (measured during surgery) can predict if a child will become confused or have other brain-related problems after surgery. It only includes children aged 1-3 who are having surgery lasting less than 4 hours.

Who can take part
- Your child must be between 1 and 3 years old.
- They must be in good overall health or have only mild illness (ASA I or II).
- Their BMI must be between 18 and 35 (a measure of weight relative to height).
- Surgery must last less than 4 hours.
- Your child must not have any language or hearing problems that prevent communication, and no infections or heart/lung complications before surgery.
- They should not have a diagnosed psychiatric condition.
