Ketogenic diet and brain stimulation for hard-to-treat depression

This study tests whether a ketogenic diet combined with a brain stimulation technique called neuromodulation can help people with treatment-resistant depression feel better. You will be assigned to follow either a ketogenic diet or a standard diet for 12 weeks while receiving the treatment.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 65 years old.
  • You are currently in a moderate to severe major depressive episode and have not responded well to at least 2 different antidepressants (or couldn't tolerate them).
  • You have not had a treatment called rTMS during this episode, and you have not failed ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) in this episode.
  • You are willing to follow either a high-fat, low-carb ketogenic diet or a standard Canadian diet for 12 weeks, and you can do daily finger-stick blood tests.
  • You have no major medical conditions like epilepsy, stroke, or a history of seizure, eating disorder, or pregnancy.
  • You are not currently on a low-carb or ketogenic diet, and you do not have food allergies or gut problems that would interfere with the study diets.
