Brain stimulation to boost memory, movement, and mood in older adults

This study tests whether high-frequency electrical stimulation of the brain can help improve thinking, movement, and mood in older adults who may or may not have early signs of memory decline. Participants will get sessions of stimulation and complete thinking and walking tasks.

Who can take part

  • You are between 65 and 89 years old and live in the community (not a nursing home).
  • You can walk without a cane or walker for at least 10 minutes at a time.
  • You must speak English and be able to have an MRI (no metal implants, pacemaker, or severe claustrophobia).
  • If you have memory complaints (like feeling your thinking has slipped), you must also have a family member or friend who can answer questions about you by phone.
  • You should not have major health problems like recent hospitalization, severe heart/lung disease, epilepsy, stroke, or be on certain mind-altering medications.

Brain Stimulation to Improve Memory in Older Adults

This study tests whether a non-invasive brain stimulation technique (tDCS) can help improve memory and thinking skills in people aged 60–75 who have noticed mild memory problems. You'll receive either real or sham (placebo) stimulation and undergo cognitive training over several weeks.
