Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 85 years old.
  • You have been on a breathing machine for more than 24 hours and your doctor says you may be ready to try breathing on your own.
  • You have a stable heart rhythm before the breathing trial starts.
  • You or your family agree to take part and you can be followed up for 72 hours after the breathing tube is removed.
  • You do not have a pacemaker, defibrillator, or other heart device that could affect the readings.
  • You are not on strong sedation that keeps you from waking up, and you do not have severe heart rhythm problems.
