Who can take part
- You are 21 years or older
- You are having mitral valve surgery (not as an emergency)
- You have no history of heart rhythm problems like atrial fibrillation or other significant irregular heartbeats
- You do not have a slow heart rate (under 60 beats per minute) or a permanent pacemaker
- Your heart's pumping function is normal (ejection fraction of 55% or higher)
- You do not have severe liver or kidney disease and are not allergic to dexmedetomidine
