Abdominal Stimulation to Improve Coughing After Spinal Cord Injury

Who can take part

  • You are at least 22 years old and were admitted to rehabilitation within the past 3 to 8 weeks with a new spinal cord injury
  • Your injury is in the neck or upper back region (levels C1 through T5) and is not getting worse
  • Your cough strength is weak (measured as less than 160 L/min peak cough flow)
  • You do not need a breathing machine (mechanical ventilator) to breathe
  • You can sit upright on your own
  • You expect to stay in rehabilitation for at least 3 more weeks
