Who can take part

  • You are 14 to 60 days after a traumatic spinal cord injury between neck and upper back level (C1 to T1, AIS A to C).
  • You are currently staying at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab for inpatient rehabilitation.
  • Your peak cough flow is below 270 liters per minute.
  • You can tolerate a one-way speaking valve or cap covering your trach tube for at least 60 minutes.
  • You are not dependent on a ventilator during the day and do not have chronic lung disease, active cancer, seizures, or moderate to severe brain injury.
  • You are medically cleared by your primary rehabilitation doctor.
