Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 80 years old.
  • You are scheduled for open surgery to treat an acute type A aortic dissection.
  • You do not have a history of cancer, mental illness, or bleeding/clotting disorders.
  • You do not have severe liver or kidney problems.
  • You are not allergic to plastic, resin, or heparin (a blood thinner).
  • You are willing to receive blood transfusions if needed.
  • You do not have an active infection or fever above 38°C (100.4°F).
