Who can take part

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You are currently on ECMO and have been for less than 24 hours.
  • You have severe ARDS, which means both lungs show signs of fluid or inflammation, the problem started within the last week, and your blood oxygen level is very low despite breathing support.
  • You are on a breathing machine (ventilator) and will need it for at least another day.
  • You are not pregnant and not a prisoner.
  • You have not had a lung transplant or surgery to remove part of a lung, and you are not using ECMO as a bridge to a transplant.
  • Your ECMO setup does not include any type of arterial (blood vessel) support, like VAV or VA ECMO.
