This trial tests a combination of chemotherapy with nelarabine in people with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) or T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma. It may help by improving remission in newly diagnosed or certain previously treated patients whose disease did not respond after one initial treatment.

Who can take part

  • You have T-cell ALL or T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (not a different type of cancer)
  • You are newly diagnosed or your first round of induction chemotherapy failed, or you are in remission after 2 or fewer treatment courses
  • You can function day to day at a level doctors rate as 0 to 3 (not fully independent but able to receive treatment)
  • Your liver blood tests are not too abnormal (bilirubin within limits, and SGOT/SGPT within about 4 times the usual upper limit)
  • Your kidney blood test (creatinine) is within limits (about 2.0, sometimes up to 2.5 if the tumor is affecting it)
  • You are not pregnant and not nursing
