Who can take part

  • You or your child is being treated at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital for a congenital heart problem that needs surgery
  • The heart condition is either cyanotic (low oxygen) or non-cyanotic (not low oxygen)
  • The baby is at least 32 weeks gestation (born at 32 weeks or later)
  • There is no known problem with the brain or spinal cord (no central nervous system malformations)
  • The team does not expect you will need emergency breathing support with ECMO after surgery
