Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older and have a solid cancer that has spread to the brain (brain metastases) needing whole-brain radiation
  • You can have brain MRI scans with contrast dye (gadolinium)
  • Your day-to-day function is good enough (Karnofsky score 70 or higher) and you should be expected to live more than 6 months
  • You do not already have “leptomeningeal disease” (cancer affecting the membranes around the brain/spinal fluid)
  • You have never had whole-brain radiation before and you are not taking memantine or other NMDA-blocking drugs
  • You can understand English, complete questionnaires/testing, and come back for follow-up visits up to 2 years
